The Murder of Andrew Nesbitt

This case isn’t well known, but I just watched an episode of See No Evil on Investigation Discovery titled “Happy Birthday to Drew.” I also picked this case because it happened in Madison, Wisconsin and that’s actually where I’m originally from. On this show it takes you through what happens through security cameras, and watching it I know all the streets of exactly where they were watching his every move from.

On March 27th, 2017 it Andrew Nesbitt’s 46th birthday and he was going out to celebrate. His roommate Rachel was interviewed in the See No Evil episode and she said that couldn’t be there to celebrate with him because she was out of town and was actually the one to find him in the early morning hours just after he was killed.

Most of my notes are taken from this episode because there’s not a lot know about this case which is unfortunate. One note that I found so tragic was that 6 years prior to moving to Madison, Drew was attacked outside a bar in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (about 2 hours from Madison). Drew had missing teeth, broken jaw and had to get a steal plate into his head as a result from being attacked and he was attacked for being openly gay. His attackers who were not named were only sentenced to 2 years in prison.

In this episode, it shows Drew going out to a few bars and then in the last few hours of his life at about 3:30am he goes into Kelley’s Market on East Washington Street and purchases a jug of milk. Then about 5 minutes later, the surveillance shows Drew talking to someone outside the market and then at 3:42am he walks towards his apartment about 2-3 blocks away. He is closely followed by the man he was talking to.

The surveillance tapes at the market never showed who Drew was talking to, but they did get some dashboard camera footage from a Green Cab. This footage and the traffic footage shows Drew and the same man from the market going towards Drew’s house. The man is later identified as Darrick Anderson, who is known around the area for stealing and other minor crimes.

Darrick is caught the next day for stealing clothes and when the Detectives from the Madison PD arrived, they took Darrick in for questioning. Darrick had an injury to his right hand, which he didn't have in the surveillance tapes the previous hours. Detective Ortega-Mendoza asks what happened and Darrick says “he was cleaning dishes,” but I believe Darrick was homeless and stole items when he needed them. Eventually Darrick asks for a lawyer. They also took him to get his hand looked at and he had deep cuts on all his fingers and had to get stitches and his DNA was also a match to items in Drew’s apartment.

Darrick Anderson has never said why he stabbed Drew over 70 times. The police also found a video Darrick took of Drew drinking some alcohol which places him in his apartment as well. Darrick tried to plea that he was insane at the time of the murder but it was denied and he was sentenced to life in prison.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

-Drew seemed like a very nice and extroverted person and let the wrong person into his house because he wanted to have a great birthday.

-The only thoughts and questions I have is why did Darrick kill Drew? Was it because he was gay? Was this a hate crime?
