The Murder of Lyric McHenry

This post is going to be a little shorter, because while there was one arrest in this case it’s technically still unsolved and it’s believed that there were 2 other men connected to killing Lyric. The 2 other men have not been arrested.

I watched the show Still A Mystery on Investigation Discovery, it’s the second season and the episode is titled ‘Terror After Midnight',’ Lyric’s case is the first one to be covered.

Lyric was the daughter of movie producer Doug McHenry and was known as a party girl but was also very professional. She graduated from Standford University in 2014.

Lyric was 26 and had just celebrated a few days with friends before her actual birthday. On August 6th, a few of her friends threw her a dinner party at Lucien, a restaurant on the Upper East Side. On August 7th, she went to Martha’s Vineyard. She stayed with a friend and did everything from horseback riding to biking around.

Lyric was going to end up back in New York for the closing of her birthday celebrations. They were going to the PH-D Lounge, a rooftop club at the Dream Hotel in Chelsea. Lyric was wearing a pink slip dress she got from her mom and pink Gucci sneakers. She met up with her sister Maya and a few of their friends.

A few hours later, Lyric told her sister she was going down to help get some of her other friends into the club. A little while after, she couldn’t get back in the club and texted her sister she was leaving. Her sister told her to wait and that she was coming with her, and when she got downstairs Lyric was gone. Her sister stated that she "had no interested in staying around at the club and was worried about her sister because Lyric was drunk.”

Maya stated that a few hours later, she tried calling Lyric and had some friends text her also and they couldn’t get a hold of her. Lyric was already dead by this point and her body was found at 5:05AM. Her body was found on a desolated overpass about 9 miles from the Dream Hotel.

When the police found Lyric, she was face up and was described as wearing a pink top, underwear and sneakers. They also found a pocketbook and inside the pocketbook they found drugs.

Maya got a call at 8:30AM from the police and said that they needed to talk to her and that it was an emergency. Around the same time, Lyric’s dad got a call from a reporter and asked him to comment on a story about his daughter and that’s how he found out she was dead.

Lyric’s autopsy showed that their were drugs in her system- cocaine and heroin. At the time it was reported to be an accidental overdose. In Still A Mystery, her dad and sister admit that Lyric used cocaine but would never do heroin. They found another shocking thing during her autopsy- Lyric was 5 months pregnant.

Two weeks after Lyric’s death, the police were asking for help in identifying a man in a surveillance video captured near where Lyric’s body was found. He was wearing a black shirt with white trim, and is noticeably showing off an expensive watch.

Two months later, a man walked into the police department to turn himself in. His name was Alexis Mejia-Ramirez, a 29 year old from the Bronx. He was arrested and charged with concealment of a human corpse, and evidence tampering. When he was brought to trial he pleaded not guilty to both.

According to the police, Mejia-Ramirez was not alone and they think 2 other men are involved. They think Lyric was picked up outside of the club and that she got in a car with the 3 men. Lyric’s family and friends say that Lyric and these “drug dealers” were not acquittances and they don’t recognize Mejia-Ramirez.

Lyric’s family thinks that Lyric got in the car for drugs, but that she didn’t know she was taking heroin. Her sister and father think that the cocaine or a drink was laced with heroin. Her family has had to do a lot with protecting Lyric’s image and to show that she was not just a party girl and was planning to apply to Harvard.

Her sister stated:

““Lyric was in such a good, mentally and emotionally healthy, state of mind at that time in her life,” she said. “Thank God that her last moments were good.””

As of right now, Mejia-Ramirez is going through court/legal proceedings and he will not say who else is involved. The police have reasons to believe another man involved is hiding out in the Dominican Republic, although they haven’t identified him.

-Who was the father of Lyric’s baby?

-Did Lyric know she was pregnant?

-Why would she have gotten in the car with 3 strange men?

-Did she actually know these men from partying?

-Was she keeping her friendships with these men a secret?

-Why won’t Mejia-Ramirez tell the police who the other men are?
