The Murder of Remmi Goyens

Warning, this case discusses murder, mental illness, and necrophilia.

For this case, I watched an episode of Signs of a Psychopath. It’s season 4 episode 6, titled ‘I Was a Star.’

A man claims he killed his girlfriend because of the voices in his head.

Background

Sadly, not much is known about Remmi Goyens or her background. At the time of her murder, she was living in an Orlando, Florida apartment with her boyfriend, Antoine Bynum, their 7-year-old daughter, and her brother.

Before her death, Remmi and Antoine began to argue frequently about his behavior and how he had been treating her.

A Strange Turn of Events

On December 20, 2011, Antoine Bynum walked into a gas station around 4:25 am. He began acting strangely and could be seen walking through the door that led behind the cash registers.

The gas station surveillance system recorded motion and sound. The gas station employee could be heard telling Antoine that he could not be back there. The police arrived just a few minutes later.

It was described in this episode that Antoine began to make delusional comments like, “I know what you guys did to me.”

Antoine was apprehended and taken to the hospital.

The Crime Scene

While Antoine was being examined, scratch marks were found on Antoine’s body.

The police went to his apartment and discovered a gruesome crime scene and Remmi’s body.

After being released from the hospital, Antoine was interrogated by two detectives. Antoine told them that he and Remmi had been together the previous night until the “incident happened.”

Antoine said someone had been playing tricks on him and he didn’t like it. He believed it was Remmi and her brother. He said it was a voodoo trick because he had been “hearing voices and all kinds of things” in his head.

The police asked how the confrontation escalated. He said he wanted Remmi to confess to what she had done. Antoine said Remmi claimed that she had no idea what he was talking about. He said Remmi told him it was his mom that had done it.

Antoine said he knew she was lying. He started beating her with his hands and with a knife. He said he stabbed and sliced her, and cut her throat.

Antoine’s Ruse

It was clear to the detectives that Antoine loved to talk about himself.

During the interview, Antoine compared himself to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwight Howard. He said he was supposed to have been an NBA or NFL star.

Antoine became upset that Remmi was constantly questioning him and not congratulating him on his accomplishments.

In the weeks before the murder, Antoine and Remmi exchanged several text messages. Remmi said she loved him but things needed to change. She referred to him spitting in her face and said it couldn’t happen again.

Antoine responded with, “One moment you love me, the next moment you want to leave.” Remmi told him that she thought it would be different.

Antoine’s messages showed that he was manipulative. He also referred to a sexual way in which he could keep her mouth shut.

Antoine admitted that he slit her throat because she wouldn’t stop running her mouth, or stop yelling and screaming. To the police, it seemed personal, and a way for Antoine to prove that he was powerful.

Loose Lips Sink Ships

Antoine told the police that he threw his phone in the toilet and tried to hide his bloody clothes after the murder.

Antoine was asked when he and Remmi were last intimate. He said right after he stabbed her. Antoine admitted that Remmi was probably not alive at this time.

The police asked if Antoine had ever been diagnosed with mental illness. He said he had been taking medication, but “not the way he was supposed to.” The medication that he used was not to treat schizophrenia.

During the interview, he slipped up as he was talking about the voices he was hearing. The police asked if he heard and saw things. He said he just saw things but immediately said he just heard voices.

Antoine Bynum was charged with murder.

During the interview, Antoine never showed any remorse. He also claimed that he would not have done anything to Remmi in front of their daughter. He showed no emotion when speaking about their daughter either.

The Conviction

While Antoine was in jail, he and his mom were heard over a jailhouse call speaking about Antoine’s temper.

Antoine had been expelled from school for bullying another boy. This boy brought a knife to school because of the bullying he endured.

Antoine told his mom that he “could have been a star.” She agreed but said his temper is what led to these situations.

Antoine Bynum was convicted of second-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison.

Other

Antoine had been in and out of jail since he was a teenager. Other charges included drug possession, battery, and theft.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Antoine tried to act like he was a paranoid schizophrenic. After he killed Remmi, he went to the gas station to create a scene and create his defense. Antoine is a narcissist and should never be let out of prison. He not only killed someone that he claimed to love but left their daughter without parents.
