The Suicide of Megan Meier

Just to warn everyone, in this post I will be talking about suicide and the events that led up to it.

Megan Taylor Meier was born on November 7th, 1992 to Tina Ronald Meier. They lived in O’Fallon, Missouri. Megan had a troubled live, she was constantly picked on in grade school and worried about her weight. She told her mother Tina as early as the 3rd grade that she wanted to kill herself. She started going to school in public schools and in 2006 when she started 8th grade, her parents put her in private school.

Megan opened a MySpace account and was constantly on it. She would open up to people online about her struggles. One day when Megan was online she received a message from a 16 year old boy named “Josh Evans.” Megan thought Josh was attractive and confided in him almost all the time. Megan even told her mom that Josh “lifted her spirits.”

On October 15th, 2006 Megan received a weird message from Josh that said

“I don’t know if I want to be friends with you anymore because I’ve heard that you are not very nice to your friends.”

Obviously Megan was really confused and replied back with “what are you talking about?” The following day, Megan asked her mom to sign into MySpace (apparently Tina only let her get the account if she had access to it). Josh was apparently sending Megan’s messages to other people and Megan was still very upset. Tina had to take Megan’s sister to an appointment so she left right after Megan got home from school. Tina told Megan before she left to get off the computer and Megan said “she was finishing up.”

Apparently a little while after Tina left she called Megan to ask her if she signed off. Megan responded with “no, they are all being so mean to me.” Tina demanded that Megan sign off immediately. Only 15 minutes passed and Megan called her mom this time in tears. Megan said Josh and a few others were posting bulletins (a survey) about her. The bulletins stated:

Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat.

Tina rushed home and immediately went to the computer. Her mom was upset that she had not signed off the computer and was upset that Megan was even talking back to these people and using “vulgar language.” Tina and Megan got into a fight and the last thing Megan said to her mom was “you’re supposed to be my mom, you’re supposed to be on my side!”

A little while later, Tina said “a sick feeling came over her,” and she rushed up to Megan’s room. Megan hung herself in the closet and died the next day. She died 3 days before her 14th birthday.

Later that day, her father Ron opened her MySpace account and saw the last message that she received. The FBI would later use it to trace it to see who was sending these messages and who “Josh” really was. The final message read:

“Everybody in O’Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you.”

Tina and Ron Meier tried to contact Josh a few days later but his account was deleted. Six weeks after Megan died, a woman that lived a few blocks from the them told them they needed to get to Megan’s school and attend a grief consuleing meeting. They were then told that a woman named Lori Drew and her daughter, who had a falling out with Megan were behind the Josh Evans account. The daughter said she spoke to her mom the night Megan died and said she heard that there were ambulances at the Meier home. Her mother told her to never mention the MySpace page. The mother and daughter said they didn’t speak out sooner because the daughter knew them from when Megan and her were friends but they tried to go to their house not too long after Tina and Ron found out. Ron said he told his friends to make them leave so he wouldn’t “physically harm them.” (Which I understand I’d be pissed too).

Tina and Ron received a letter on November 30th, 2006 saying:

“We are sorry for the extreme pain you are going through and can only imagine how difficult it must be. We have every compassion for you and your family.”

Lori Drew claimed that she was monitoring the account that her daughter used and that her daughter just wanted to speak to Megan. She claimed that her daughter was the one being bullied and wanted to create a page of a young male to see “what was being said about her daughter online”.

Unfortunately no charges were ever filed in this case. This case was looked into by the FBI, they looked at the computer hard drive and conducted interviews. Megan's parents don’t want to file a civil lawsuit, they want the law changed so that people know what happened to Megan was a crime. Ron and Tina divorced and Tina still blames herself to this day, but she shouldn’t. It was Lori and her daughter’s fault and no one can change my opinion.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS:

  1. How did Lori Drew not get charged with anything??

  2. Why was she even communicating with teenagers anyways?

  3. Was there any proof anyone was even saying things about Lori’s daughter?

  4. I first heard about this case when I was in middle school and to this day IT MAKES ME SO MAD.
